Finally, someone speaking out on the hazards of CFLs. Texas Representative, Ted Poe, gives an excellent overview of the impracticality of using such bulbs. Does the energy savings really cancel out the energy resources that are required by the EPA with regard to disposal of unbroken, mercury filled bulbs, much less the haz-mat clean up a broken bulb requires. I fail to see the efficiency with something that requires normal disposal to be in two plastic bags. First, using unnecessary plastic that you would not normally use in disposing of regular light bulbs raises an issue. Second, if you break one, no only must you clear the room of all living creatures for at least 15 minutes, but you must use latex gloves to pick up every single piece, and then dispose of it in a glass jar. There’s more on the video at the link below, but the one thing that does make it energy efficient for the United States is that all of these bulbs are manufactured in China. This is the only place they are manufactured, and we KNOW what good quality China provides us with from tainted dog food to lead paint on children’s toys.
