Today, the Supreme Court will review this issue. For background, visit http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/12/obama-birth-cer.html, as well as previous entries in this section and Gracie Dane on www.sensiblelife.com.

I’ve read many comments to blogs out there, and especially on this one: http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/12/obama_citizenship_lawsuit_supr.html

There seems to be a lot of batting back and forth about this being a party issue, and I might note that one commentor stated that (paraphrasing) Republicans are sore losers and use the judicial sytem to try and get their way. There’s no basis to that allegation, and in fact, aside from Al Gore, a Democrat, using the judicial system in the chad fiasco, the issue of this authentic birth certificate was filed in Federal Court by Philip Berg, a Democrat, and it was filed months prior to the election where no one knew what the outcome would be.

Here’s the thing, this is not about party, race, or sore losers. This is about the Consititution of the United States of America. Our Constitution reguires the president to be an American born citizen who has resided in the U.S. no less than 14 years.  The certificate of live birth Obama had posted on the internet is not an authentic birth certificate with the seal. Even for a U.S. minor child to get into school, or a U.S. citizen to apply for a passport, they must provide the certificate with the seal. Anything less will not do.

In addition, if a person is not born on U.S. soil, but is born to at least one U.S. citizen parent on foreign soil, they may derive their citizenship through their U.S. parent as of the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952. The laws have changed over the years and there have been amendments, but the bottom line is, whether or not Obama was born on U.S. soil isn’t in question as much as whether he has the right to claim U.S. citizenship.

I recently completed a 12 year long search for documenation to prove my husband and my brother in law’s U.S. citizenship, derived through their U.S. citizen father. My husband and brother in law were born in Canada to a Canadian mother and a U.S. father. Their father is deceased and could not attest to his citizenship on his own, so we were tasked with producing their father’s birth certificate, complete with the seal, and evidence of their father’s residency in the United States prior to their birth for a minimum of 10 years, 5 of those before the age of 15 and 5 of those years after the age of 14. Essentially, we were required to research records back to 1915 and produce that proof before my husband and brother in law would be granted a U.S. passport.

They now have their passports, but I do take offense to the flippant manner in which the Amercian public feels the issue of Obama’s citizenship is frivolous and nothing more than sour grapes on the part of Republicans. If we are required to prove citizenship for a simple passport, it’s not unreasonable at all that Obama be required to prove his citizenship for the right to run our country. It is part of our nation’s law. To ignore it, or not require him to prove it, when presidential candidates before him have had to do the same, is treason in its most dangerous form.

Bottom line, if Obama is truly a U.S. citizen, he should have no trouble proving it, especially with all the resources he has available. We did it with only 4 individuals performing research.

Thank you! I wish more people knew your story, it’s the very crutch of the case. Obamas mother was not able to pass her citizenship. This seems so very simple and yet has become so complicated.

You’re welcome. Thank you for your comment. I did e-mail our Senator with this very issue, but not sure if it was read or even taken into consideration. While not a fan of Obama, I hope he is advised to just provide the proof if it truly exists. If I was challenged on something I could prove, I’d certainly do it.
