Obama’s Dilemma

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Several weeks ago the story broke about Senator Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright Jr, and his extremist views. Perhaps Senator Obama wasn’t in attendance during these “sermons” or perhaps he didn’t read the church bulletins. Nonetheless, Obama didn’t act or respond until the media heated up. Just reading these extremist excerpts makes me cringe.

“We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.” — Sept. 16, 2001 (the first Sunday after 9/11)

“The government . . . wants us to sing God Bless America. No, no, no. God damn America; that’s in the bible, for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human.” — 2003

“The United States of White America.” — July 22, 2007

If I were to hear the former from the pulpit of my church, either in person or via a recording, I would be immediately upset. I wouldn’t wait a few years to express my displeasure or move my membership. Christians should always look to their Bible to determine if a teaching is Biblical.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

If this rhetoric is coming from your pulpit, now is the time for change. The Bible is very clear as to what is going on.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. - Ephesians 5:6

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. - Colossians 2:8
