If Unions are so great…

And, they have so much to offer; why are they pushing the Employee Free Choice Act? Don’t let the name fool you, there won’t be a “free choice,” this eliminates secret ballots for  unionizing a company.

Unions have poured millions into Congressional Democrat coffers over the years and the latest agenda that’s being pushed is legislation to take away workers’ right to vote and provide the ability to certify unions after a card-check campaign.

The rhetoric being spouted by the union activists and their Democrat mouthpieces make it seem like this act would protect workers’ freedom to freely choose to join a union. How would eliminating a secret ballot ensure freedom of choice? A private vote is more than a fundamental democratic right; it also protects workers and ensures that they can express their true views.

A union has a direct financial stake in the outcome of an organizing drive. If the workers organize, the union will collect 1 percent to 2 percent of their wages in dues.

Here’s an example of union spin:

America’s working people are struggling to make ends meet these days and our middle class is disappearing. The best opportunity working people have to get ahead economically is by uniting to bargain with their employers for better wages and benefits.

The Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800, S. 1041), supported by a bipartisan coalition in Congress, would level the playing field for workers and employers and help rebuild America’s middle class.

It’s not about rebuilding the middle class. It’s about strengthening the union. Unions have been in control since 1866. Have they made a difference in the middle class? Union bosses get richer, does the union worker?

We leave you with a closing thought… Where would General Motors Be Without the UAW? Consider that question in light of automobile makers coming to Congress for a bailout.

Are 401(k)s safe from congressional Democrats?

SL Editor on Nov 6th 2008  Print This Post Print This Post

James Taranto wrote an interesting piece on October 23, 2008 in the Wall Street Journal. As expected, none of this was picked up by the liberal media. Why? It embodies the essence of the socialist mindset of spreading the wealth around.

A plan by Teresa Ghilarducci, professor of economic-policy analysis at the New School for Social Research in New York, contains elements that are being considered. . . .

The current system of providing tax breaks on 401(k) contributions and earnings would be eliminated. “I want to stop the federal subsidy of 401(k)s,” Ghilarducci said in an interview. “401(k)s can continue to exist, but they won’t have the benefit of the subsidy of the tax break.”

Ghilarducci outlined her plan last year in a paper for the left-liberal Economic Policy Institute, in which she acknowledges that her plan would amount to a tax increase on workers making more than $75,000–considerably less than the $250,000 Barack Obama has said would be his tax-hike cutoff. In addition, workers would be able to pass on only half of their account balances to their heirs; presumably the government would seize the remaining half. (Under current law, 401(k) balances are fully heritable, although they are subject to the income tax.)

Just wait folks… it’s only just beginning!

Be On Guard

SL Editor on Nov 5th 2008  Print This Post Print This Post

A certain percentage of Americans have spoken. What are we to expect from an Obama presidency? We’ve brought together a few things that you need to be on guard about. If the banning of opposition media from Obama’s plane is any indication of what is to come, then the truth may be more difficult to find.

  • Source of Information: Watch carefully to see if conservative media lose their place in an Obama presidency. If Fox News and others are shut out from the White House press corps and only the liberal media remain; it will be more difficult to find the truth.
  • Watch for the abolishment of the Posse Comitatus Act: The statute generally prohibits federal military personnel and units of the National Guard under federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. On July 2, 2008, Obama said: “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”  {Emphasis added.}
  • Watch for changes to the Insurrection Act; The Insurrection Act of 1807 is the set of laws that govern the President of the United States of America’s ability to deploy troops within the United States to put down lawlessness, insurrection and rebellion. There have been dangerous modifications to that Act already. Watch and see if it gets watered down more or if your civil liberties fade away.
  • Increase in FCC authority: If the FCC suddenly starts censoring media outlets that “go against” the will of the state; we’re headed for deep trouble.
  • Celebrations from unusual audiences: If Hamas, Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations start to dance in the streets and celebrate our new electorate; tinges of buyer’s remorse may start to settle in. An article on a well read counterterrorism blog has an interesting viewpoint.

A quote by Jonathan Falwell really struck home. Some folks may have just put into office America’s first “made for TV” president.

Unbridled by true religion and the moral knowledge that follows, the current political season reveals that the majority of Americans may have finally succumbed to self–destructive gluttony. Thus their choice on Tuesday may represent what Plato feared: that the masses, uninformed by [moral] reason, have been easily swayed by the emotional and deceptive rhetoric of ambitious politicians.

Does the phrase “emotional and deceptive rhetoric” sound a lot like what you’ve been fed by the mainstream liberal press? It makes us wonder if the uninformed masses will wake up and wonder what they brought home with them last evening.

A minority of voters believed that moral issues are the main focus and that government should play a limited role in our lives. In other words, those are the people who believe in a free constitional republic. The majority of voters, led to the polls by hook or by crook, increasingly look for that government handout to solve all of their problems. They lack in self-initiative and are purely existing for the entitlements. That abhorrent behavior results in a socialist democracy closer to what is seen across Western Europe. One needs to heed the words of Benjamin Franklin: “When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” A “spread-the-wealth” president just got elected.

We leave you with a couple of quotes from one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, “I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.”

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. - Thomas Jefferson”
